Day 27 — Time to poke the Master Baiters

After helping capture the ironclad, the crew studies its fire-driven engine and dines with Saint Sebastian.

We have won the day. The red emissary actually looks like Benedict Cumberbatch. They are rounding up all the dragons on the deck. We go down the deck and we see that engineers are being grilled by Albianites. The fire that seem to have powered this ship is now a gaping pit that’s gone cold. There’s a layer of soot.

Ryuto lends a fire stick to Kahu who is in the cusp of understanding how to ignite this engine. Ryuto being of dragonkind is able to understand most of how this engine works while Pachinko is puzzled of how this engineering feat is assembled. Kahu breathes fire into the soot. To the shock of everyone, Kahu ignites it with his flame breath. The whole core becomes ablaze and lingers for many seconds in the central chamber, this trigger a steam reaction that powers the engine. Everyone is freaked out. Pachinko tries to explain how the steam engine works. The Albians are impressed with Pachinko and Kahu and are calling for their chief engineer and technical sailors.

Every crew member of this ship is of the red dragon species so they can all use fire sticks. Ryuto notices this detail.

People are starting to notice us and wondering where we came from. Admiral Jenkins comes down to meet us, the orchestrator of this whole mission. He comes over and says “Congratulations for performing your duties above and beyond”. He wants to ask what we desire. He wants to share the spoils.

The share of our spoils will be based on the assumption that 1 ironclad = 10 ships of the line worth. 233k gold divided for all hands. 400 people were in the assault. We get 3333 gold. We give 1333 to captain jackdoe and the crew. 500g for each of us.

They are offering us a consulting job to understand the operation of this ship. Kahu fires a fire stick fire ball into the soot pit and it seems to have damaged the mechanism. The admiral is furious. We quickly make an exit.

Everyone is going to Kapikala in Moa’Tor so we’ll go there to see what’s going on. We’ll head with other ships in the delegation. We’re kinda racing with other ships towards Moa’Tor. The flagship of the Carolingians is navigating along our side.

We have 2 weeks of downtime. We are working on some stuff:

Oona is crafting potions
Pachinko is trying to reproduce the steam engine
Kahu is organizing a state dinner for the Carolingians

The captain of the Carolingian ship refuses to leave the ship but sends a first officer as delegate to the dinner. We anchor in the evening and the carolingians come. We can’t compete in elegance with the Carolingians. The first officer comes in his ceremonial uniform. Monsieur Auben with him is an entourage of two first class sailors and a rather sick looking St Sebastian. Monsieur Auben is happy to be on board and brings St Sebastian.

Kahu introduces himself and mentions what we’ve been doing. Contessa remembers St Sebastian and is amazed he is back. He is friendly enough. St Sebastian makes Kahu feel a sense of doom, but not as bad as he expected. Close proximity to St Sebastian is not as bad as seeing Theresa in the air far from the ship. St Sebastian knows that we tried to apprehend the cultists that killed him. Don Gregorio was a good man. There are better saints coming along this time. St Sebastian is the saint of valor. He was a foot soldier for the church in life. Saints are chosen by the eternal flame at the moment of martyrdom. The first rebirth is the ascension, a pillar of flame announces their existence and the reliquary is created. St Sebastian is only 400 years old. St Sebastian does not agree that Saints are a means of war.

St Sebastian’s main power is Martial Prowess. Pachinko is interested in following St Sebastian as an altar server. The church has decided that the souls in the isles are more in peril than previously feared. At the beginning, they only sent him because there was little volition to mandate conversion in the isle. The curia wasn’t interested in mass conversion, it was politically undesirable. Now the island’s peril is clear and since there’s a heretical movement, the new path is to help the isles and set them in the right path. He wants to spread the eternal flame.

The First office is honored to deliver the reliquary of the saints. It’s a very dangerous job for the sailors since the saints die without the reliquary.

Ryuto learn Navigation, Kahu becomes more mysterious.

Pachinko is obsessed with learning how to make a steam engine after what he saw in the celestial ship. Pachinko understands the mechanism but seems unable to reproduce it because he needs a specific alloy to make it work.

We arrived in the capital and are summoned by lord Molas who is the accountant.
